"The Vanishing Wild Horse" Series 2009 : "Now you see them....soon you won't."

I feel fortunate to roam with them from time to time and experience their world first hand. The smell of fresh sage and morning dew is where I sit to watch them- Often at heights of 8,000 feet bands roam together, bachelors finding company with each other, and stallions chasing others away. There are no real fence lines just freedom one that I pray will remain.

If we don't take a moment in our lives to help them they will be gone forever. Our children will never know the rush of a band of wild ones passing them by with thunderous hooves in the tall sage and yarrow, or just simply knowing that they still run free when we lay our heads on our pillows at night.

All proceeds go to assist the old horses that have been removed from the wild, horses I have photographed that are in need, and to continue my work on documenting our wild horses that are vanishing with nearly every click of my camera.

There is nothing like seeing a wild horse running free owned by no one.

Thank you for caring,

All the best, Rachael

Canyon Creek Horse Rescue : ~Every photograph has a story this is Canyon Creek’s~

My passion for this farm started late one afternoon in Oct 2005 I stood in the pasture with my camera in hand as the first load of babies ran past me, some stopped to see what I was up to, scared, curious, all separated from the herd they had known all their lives.. babies from their momma’s ...momma's from babies who had already gone to slaughter or live shipped to Europe & Asia for human consumption. I felt a stillness then a faint echo...of the one's that weren't here.

I am proud & honored to have photographed their lives...With the hope that my work may help to change the view of PMU horses- leaving the stigma behind..one herd and image at a time.

So.California Firestorm-Ramona Horses Saved : On October 25th our ranch was contacted to help haul 80 bales of hay donated to the Emergency Animal rescue location in Ramona who helped over 300 horses evacuated from the fire in Ramona California. Ramona is roughly 3 hours from our ranch and traffic was tough through the closed roads. We had access to areas that were burned out completely. Where once beautiful ranch homes stood now were just a pile of ash and smoke. Like our friend Carol said "This is like a war zone." we drove past dairy farms with smoldering manure piles, family homes with just the iron gates left, burned out trees, and mountains to come upon our end destination. Our hearts went out to every family we saw along the way who were standing in a daze as they cleaned up what was left of their homes. We asked those with horses along the way if they needed any hay. Everyone was ok at least for now.

We donated our services, hauling hay, loading and unloading it, walking horses, feeding carrots, photography services for identification, and general kindness. All the horses were in the wonderful hands of EAR when we arrived. Water had arrived a few days before so the horses were starting to perk up.
Many had already been identified by owners who had to evacuate so fast they didn't have time to take their horses with them.

One family looked for four days before finding their horses and were so happy to just sit in an arena and share the peace with them again.
While my photography was no longer needed for ID purposes (thank goodness!) I photographed my experience and our journey through the aftermath and smoke to a lovely ranch where the horses were safe and the firefighters were smiling.

Thank you to the wonderful folks from EAR, Rebecca the Hay coordinator, East Valley Feed, and the wonderful people who donated time, money, love, and kindness to the horses from Ramona. We wish you all the best you are awesome!

Rocking H Ranch Miniature Horses : In the mountains of Agua Dulce California there is a special place called Rocking H Ranch.
Owned by Dick & Susan Hardie who have been breeders and owners of mini's for nearly 30 years.

I first met Dick and Susan last summer and now own one of their babies "Squirt" we love them and hope that you will enjoy a look into a world that is small but mighty, where the fence is thigh high, and two stallions rule the roost and laying in the grass to shoot is my best bet.
(remember none of the horses here are over 35 inches tall)
Enjoy!
For more info on these wonderful people and their very tiny but wonderful horses please visit rockinghranch.tripod.com or call 661-268-1277.
