Canyon Creek Farm..Saving One Herd at a Time.. : ~Every photograph has a story this is Canyon Creek’s~

My passion for this farm started late one afternoon in Oct 2005 I stood in the pasture with my camera in hand as the first load of babies ran past me, some stopped to see what I was up to, scared, curious, all separated from the herd they had known all their lives.. babies from their momma’s ...momma's from babies who had already gone to slaughter or live shipped to Europe & Asia for human consumption. I felt a stillness then a faint echo...of the one's that weren't here.

I can't explain what these horses have given me...only that I can breathe again. I lost my 8 month old Oldenburg Warmblood colt “Finale” on a cold January morning 2006 in a tragic accident. As the truck pulled up to take him away I had to leave. I went to go sit with the babies at Canyon Creek. To feel that hot breath and a soft nose of a foal on my face was my healing, as it has been for many others since then.

I have been a horse woman all my life. I have seen rescues come and go, this is a different story. One that is actually making a change, one that truly cares about the animals and the people they connect with. This is a farm that won't adopt a horse to "just anyone" and I say "BRAVO!"

This farm SAVES horses from killer buyers often down to the wire at auction ...These horses are carefully matched with people... as it should be and the after care is just as incredible. Take a look at this gallery filled with Registered Quarter horses, paints, outstanding and well bred spotted drafts, warmbloods, and you tell me if they deserve to die horrific deaths.
They didn't ask to be born, but they all were, and it is up to horse lovers like us to take a stand against slaughter and cruel treatment of our majestic treasures.

The word "rescue" has gotten a bad rap as Tammy at CCF says “the only thing we are rescuing is their future. They belong in a stable NOT on a table."
By purchasing one of these photos from the Canyon Creek Gallery you are supporting
their efforts to save more. I donate ALL proceeds from this gallery to them.

Some people ask me "how can you donate so much?"

My answer is simple, " because during life, death, love, and laughter, they have taken me on this journey that I never expected and one that is deep in my heart. They share their souls with me, how can I make a profit from a gift that is so special as a saved life? All of them, including my own, have given me memories that I would have never known without them , and there is nothing better then having my camera in hand walking with them as the sunsets on another day of a wonderful life.”

My Family and I are VERY proud to own 5 of these beauties - My registered American Quarter horses (AQHA) are from- Dash for Cash, Doc Bar, Lightning Bar, Joe bee, Quincy, Skip, Poco Bueno, Jet/Three bars. Just to give you an idea of the incredible breeding stock my five have. There are more just like them!

I am proud & honored to photograph their lives...Hoping to change the view of PMU horses- leaving the stigma behind..one herd and image at a time.

Thank you for viewing and THANK YOU CANYON CREEK for saving their precious lives. To learn more about the hormonal replacement drug PREMARIN which is supplied by PMU horses via Pregnant Mare Urine. Please go to www.canyoncreekfarm.com

Rocking H Ranch Miniature Horses : In the mountains of Agua Dulce California there is a special place called Rocking H Ranch.
Owned by Dick & Susan Hardie who have been breeders and owners of mini's for nearly 30 years.

I first met Dick and Susan last summer and now own one of their babies "Squirt" we love them and hope that you will enjoy a look into a world that is small but mighty, where the fence is thigh high, and two stallions rule the roost and laying in the grass to shoot is my best bet.
(remember none of the horses here are over 35 inches tall)
Enjoy!
For more info on these wonderful people and their very tiny but wonderful horses please visit rockinghranch.tripod.com or call 661-268-1277.

So.California Firestorm-Ramona Horses Saved : On October 25th our ranch was contacted to help haul 80 bales of hay donated to the Emergency Animal rescue location in Ramona who helped over 300 horses evacuated from the fire in Ramona California. Ramona is roughly 3 hours from our ranch and traffic was tough through the closed roads. We had access to areas that were burned out completely. Where once beautiful ranch homes stood now were just a pile of ash and smoke. Like our friend Carol said "This is like a war zone." we drove past dairy farms with smoldering manure piles, family homes with just the iron gates left, burned out trees, and mountains to come upon our end destination. Our hearts went out to every family we saw along the way who were standing in a daze as they cleaned up what was left of their homes. We asked those with horses along the way if they needed any hay. Everyone was ok at least for now.

We donated our services, hauling hay, loading and unloading it, walking horses, feeding carrots, photography services for identification, and general kindness. All the horses were in the wonderful hands of EAR when we arrived. Water had arrived a few days before so the horses were starting to perk up.
Many had already been identified by owners who had to evacuate so fast they didn't have time to take their horses with them.

One family looked for four days before finding their horses and were so happy to just sit in an arena and share the peace with them again.
While my photography was no longer needed for ID purposes (thank goodness!) I photographed my experience and our journey through the aftermath and smoke to a lovely ranch where the horses were safe and the firefighters were smiling.

Thank you to the wonderful folks from EAR, Rebecca the Hay coordinator, East Valley Feed, and the wonderful people who donated time, money, love, and kindness to the horses from Ramona. We wish you all the best you are awesome!
For more information on how you can help please contact

Enjoy!

Fire in the Sky : First came the Santa Ana "Devil Winds" then the fires. Approx. 30 fires scorched Southern California this week.
As we stood near our barn watching flames go up the mountain and toward the West all we could do was have hope in each other and our horses that we would all be ok. After four days of intense smoke, wind, and wildfires it came to a rest for us last night. These are just a few images of our experience and how we tried to keep our lives on track during this horrific time for our friends and communities here.
Thank you to the brave firefighters who gave us hope with every helicopter that passed over our home you are all amazing!

Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory : High on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation is Carson Forest where 285 wild horses roam free on 75,000 acres of land.
I feel fortunate enough to have roamed with them and experience their world first hand. Often at heights of 8,000 feet bands roamed together, bachelors finding company with each other, and stallions chasing others away. There are no real fence lines just freedom one that I pray will continue.

There are so many moments I will never forget but the one that stands out is watching a band run into the sunrise and another band joined. The two stallions met nose to nose and then they all ran together greeting the morning light. It was only for a brief moment that we saw that band but I can't think of a better way to start my day then with them. Communing with the bachelors as the soft morning light burst onto their coats was stunning as well.

Simple words cannot express the feeling in my heart.
I had heart jumping experiences (thanks to Brazos a stunning bay stallion), quiet times watching the bands, and a true learning experience that has broadened my view of horses in general. There is something so primal being out in 75,000 acres with the wild ones. A feeling that brings us all down to what is real in this world. No cell phone service, just our cameras and sense of adventure seeking these sacred beings out. I am so grateful to Lynne Pomeranz for sharing her world of wild horses with us and I hope many more go to see them and help preserve our sacred treasures. If we don't, our children will never know the rush of a band of wild ones passing them by running in the tall sage and yarrow, or just simply knowing that they still run free when we lay our heads on our pillows at night.
I left the Jicarilla wild horses with hope in my heart that I will return to this special place in the spring and see the bachelors, baby Aztec, and all the young ones growing up and STILL running free.

Feel free to leave a few comments about your gallery experience. If you would like more information on prints please email me at Rachael@Indianstunts.com
Thank you to Jennifer Dennison from Western Horseman Magazine for sharing our experience and writing a wonderful article about it to the world.
Thanks and enjoy!
